Who Emil Zendera is
Emil Zendera
Born in 1998 in Mutare, Zimbabwe, Emil Zendera’s early life was shaped by movement and cultural convergence. At 18 months old his single mother relocated the family to South Africa, where Emil grew up immersed in a vibrant mosaic of languages, customs and artistic traditions. That environment instilled in him a deep appreciation for diversity and for the many ways communities celebrate life.
From a young age Emil’s curiosity extended across artistic disciplines: music, photography, drawing, painting, classical and contemporary cinema, and the craft of acting. Each medium informed the others, forming a holistic creative sensibility that prizes both technical skill and emotional truth.
After high school he enrolled at Open Window Institute in Centurion, Gauteng, where he pursued formal study in a Film TV and Screen Acting degree. During his bachelor’s program Emil discovered a particular affinity for cinematography. He realized his voice was strongest behind the lens shaping mood, framing narrative and translating performance into visual poetry and chose to focus his practice on the craft of filmmaking.
Now back in Harare, Zimbabwe, Emil is actively contributing to the local arts ecosystem. He continues to develop projects that reflect his cross-cultural experience: work that honors Zimbabwean roots, engages with southern African artistic languages, and explores the visual possibilities born of cultural exchange. His work emphasizes thoughtful composition, emotional clarity and a commitment to storytelling that foregrounds diverse perspectives working in the House of Stone.
